BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University women's tennis team picked up a key North Atlantic Conference victory on Monday afternoon, edging Thomas College 4-3 at Bangor High School.
The Eagles (3-1, 2-1 NAC) claimed the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 before splitting the six singles matches with the Terriers (1-5, 1-2 NAC).
Husson got off to a strong start in doubles play as the No. 1 pairing of senior Kayla Lockhart and junior Anah Albert earned a 7-5 victory over Lily Daigle and Taylor Juhase.
Thomas answered at No. 2 doubles, where Gigi Bhagat and Sarah Mack defeated sophomores Katelyn Cotter and Sadie May 6-2.
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, freshmen Julia Spencer and Lydia Jordan delivered for the Eagles at No. 3, cruising to a 6-2 victory over Kayla Bailey and Tracy Lopez to give Husson a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Thomas evened the match at No. 1 singles, as Juhase rallied past Lockhart 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Terriers followed with another three-set victory at No. 2. Albert bounced back from a 6-0 opening-set loss to win the second set 7-6 (7-5), but Bhagat responded with a 6-3 victory in the deciding third set.
Daigle extended Thomas' advantage at No. 3 singles with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback victory over Cotter.
Husson answered at the bottom half of the lineup, beginning with May at No. 4 singles. May earned a straight-set 6-2, 7-5 victory over Mack to pull the Eagles closer.
Junior Mallory Beaulieu followed with a three-set victory at No. 5, defeating Lopez 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Spencer completed Husson's singles victories at No. 6, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bailey.
The Eagles are back on the court on Sunday when they head to the University of Southern Maine for a 1 p.m. contest.
