BRIGHTON, Mass. — The Husson University women's tennis team opened its season in North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Simmons University at Daly Field.
Husson (0-1, 0-1 NAC) picked up its lone point of the match at No. 5 singles, where sophomore Sadie May battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Grace Burke in three sets.
May fell 6-1 in the first set before responding with a 7-5 victory in the second. She carried that momentum into the deciding match tiebreak, earning a 10-5 win to secure the Eagles' lone victory.
Freshman Julia Spencer also pushed her singles match to three sets at the No. 6 position. After dropping the opening set 6-2 to Victoria McCrann, Spencer answered with a 7-5 victory in the second set before McCrann prevailed 10-6 in the match tiebreak.
Simmons (3-1, 1-0 NAC) claimed the remaining four singles matches in straight sets. Masha Shutts defeated senior Kayla Lockhart 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, while Emilie Lapointe earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over junior Anah Albert at No. 2.
Amoli Vad topped sophomore Katelyn Cotter 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 match, while Ivy Cote defeated junior Mallory Beaulieu 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
The Sharks swept the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Shutts and Vad defeated Albert and Lockhart 6-1 at No. 1, while Cote and McCrann recorded a 6-0 victory over Beaulieu and Olivia Christensen at No. 2. Lapointe and Emma Parsons completed the sweep with a 6-2 win over Cotter and May at No. 3.
Husson looks to bounce back tomorrow when it heads to Lesley University for another conference matchup beginning at 1 p.m.
