BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University baseball team delivered an offensive showcase on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the University of Maine at Presque Isle in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the John Winkin Complex. The Eagles claimed a 21-2 victory in game one before completing the sweep with a 15-3 win in game two.
Game 1: Husson 21, UMaine-Presque Isle 2
In game one, Husson (20-16, 18-5 NAC) erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take immediate control. Senior Colin Marshall ignited the rally with a leadoff single before freshman Preston Libby worked a walk. After a sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position, junior Matt Holmes blasted a three-run home run to right field to open the scoring. The Eagles continued to capitalize on free passes and wild pitches, with senior Joe Hamelin drawing an RBI walk, Marshall adding another RBI walk, Libby delivering a two-run double, and senior Cam Rendell capping the inning with a two-run single to make it 10-0.
Husson added a run in the second on an RBI single from Hamelin before breaking the game open further in the third inning. The Eagles plated seven runs in the frame, using patience at the plate and timely hitting. Junior Henry Lausier and freshman John Hanlon each drew bases-loaded walks, Hamelin drove in a run, and Libby added another RBI hit as the lead ballooned to 18-0.
The Eagles continued to manufacture runs late, including a sacrifice fly by Hamelin in the fifth and a two-run single from freshman Wes Piper in the sixth to reach the 21-run mark.
On the mound, freshman Jack Karlonas tossed three scoreless innings to start the game, allowing no hits while striking out three. Senior Max Lukeman earned the win in relief, and sophomore Spencer Johnson along with senior Mason Cycenas-Heimer combined to close out the victory.
Offensively, Libby and Holmes each drove in three runs, while Hamelin also added three RBIs. Lausier scored three times as Husson took advantage of 13 walks in the contest.
Game 2: Husson 15, UMaine-Presque Isle 3
In game two, Husson (21-16, 19-5 NAC) once again responded early after falling behind 1-0 in the first inning. The Eagles answered with a five-run second inning to seize control. Lausier tied the game with an RBI single before Marshall delivered a two-run double. Libby followed with an RBI double, and Rendell drove in a run with a triple to give Husson a 5-1 lead.
The Eagles extended the lead in the third inning when senior Hunter Curtis launched a solo home run. Later in the frame, Hamelin and Marshall each recorded RBI singles to push the advantage to 8-1.
Husson added three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Marshall, who finished with a game-high four RBIs.
After the opposition scored twice in the sixth, the Eagles put the game away in the seventh inning. Andrew Cote drove in a run on a single, junior Ryan Bousquet followed with an RBI base hit, and junior Tanner Crowley along with Wes Piper each added RBI hits to cap the scoring at 15-3.
Senior Allen Wheaton earned the win on the mound in game two, allowing just one run over four innings while striking out five. Junior Jack Lano provided two innings of relief, and senior Jack Cote closed out the game.
Marshall led the Eagles offensively in game two with three hits and four RBIs, while Hamelin added three hits and two RBIs. Lausier, Rendell, and Piper each contributed multi-hit performances as Husson finished with 19 hits in the nightcap.
The Eagles end the regular season on a 10-game winning streak, as they now turn their attention to the NAC playoffs, which begin on Thursday at the Winkin Complex with the full schedule to be announced.
