WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University women's lacrosse team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Thomas College 10-2 in North Atlantic Conference action on the road in its regular season finale.
Husson (10-4, 5-1 NAC) controlled the game from the opening draw, jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter. Sophomore Kate Boehmcke opened the scoring off an assist from senior Averi Baker, and the Eagles quickly built momentum as Baker added a man-up goal before Boehmcke struck again to give Husson a 3-0 advantage after one.
The Eagles broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring five times in a decisive stretch. Baker netted two more goals in the period, including another unassisted tally, while seniors Laela Martinez and Gracie Gardner each found the back of the net off assists from sophomore Reese Sullivan. Sophomore Adella Mabee capped the run with a goal, helping Husson take an 8-0 lead into halftime.
Husson continued its strong play into the third quarter as Martinez added another goal to push the lead to 9-0 before Thomas (4-8, 0-6 NAC) got on the board late in the frame. The Terriers added one more in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles responded in the closing minutes as Martinez completed her hat trick with a free-position goal to seal the 10-2 victory.
Baker and Martinez led the offensive effort with three goals apiece, while Boehmcke added two goals and an assist. Sullivan played a key role as a facilitator, recording three assists, and Gardner and Mabee each contributed a goal.
Defensively, Husson limited Thomas to just 10 total shots and forced 48 turnovers while holding a 42-26 advantage in ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Salin Bachor earned the win, making five saves in net.
Martinez made some history in the victory, as she set a new Husson women's lacrosse record for caused turnovers in a career, as she surpassed the mark of Amanda Deshaies to take the spot atop the leaderboard.
The Eagles turn their attention to the NAC playoffs, as their seeding will be announced by the conference early this coming week.
