BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team played a commanding non-conference game against Bowdoin College on Tuesday night at the Winkin Complex, winning 11-4.
The Eagles (11-15) would get into the scoring column first in the bottom of the first, with junior Matt Holmes hitting a one-run triple, and would score off a throwing error, giving Husson a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles' offense erupted in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs in the frame. Senior Hunter Curtis would start the scoring off by crossing home on a wild pitch. Senior Colin Marshall hit a one-run single out to right field, followed by a two-run single by senior Cam Rendell.
Holmes would strike again, this time with a two-run double out to right field. Freshman Liam Kelley would bring in Holmes with a one-run single, ending the fourth up 9-0.
The Polar Bears (13-17) would end the shutout in the top of the sixth with a two-run single.
Husson would get those two runs right back in the bottom half, with Kelley hitting a one-run triple down the right field line, and then scoring off a wild pitch, giving the Eagles an 11-2 lead.
Bowdoin would add on a couple of runs in the top of the ninth, making it an 11-4 game, but it wouldn't be enough.
Holmes would go 2-4 with three RBIs, hitting a double and a triple, while Rendell would go 2-3 with two RBIs, drawing a walk and stealing a base. Kelley went 2-5 with two RBIs of his own and a triple, with Marshall going 1-4 with one RBI.
Sophomore Avery Lawrence would start for Husson, throwing four shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two. Freshman Jack Karlonas would get the win, pitching two innings of relief while giving up two runs and striking out three. Freshman Max Hopkins would pitch a scoreless inning of relief, and sophomore Michael Skowrwon would close out the game, going two innings while allowing two runs and striking out two, while also getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the eighth inning.Â
The Eagles will head on the road against Colby College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
