BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team fell to Colby College in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening at the Winkin Complex, losing 7-5.
Colby (17-8) would strike first with a sac fly in the top of the first.
Husson (9-14) would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, with junior Matt Holmes connecting on a one-run double to tie the score up 1-1.Â
The Mules struck back again in the top of the second, scoring two more runs.
Holmes would answer again for the Eagles in the bottom of the third, hitting a one-run single up the middle to cut the lead to 3-2.Â
Colby would begin to pull ahead, scoring four more runs over the next three innings and silencing the Husson bats.
The Eagles would show signs of life in the bottom of the seventh. First, junior Henry Lausier would draw a bases-loaded walk. With the bases still loaded, junior Ryan Bousquet would float a two-run single into shallow left-center field, pulling Husson with two, ending the inning down 7-5.
The Eagle bullpen would hold the Mules scoreless over the last three frames, giving the offense a chance to tie it up.
The chance would arrive in the bottom of the ninth, with runners on first and second with two outs, but a sharp line drive to the Colby shortstop would end their comeback bid.Â
Holmes would lead the Husson offense, going 3-4 with two doubles and RBIs while drawing a walk, with Bousquet going 2-4, adding another two RBIs.
Six pitchers went on the bump for the Eagles, as freshman Luke Chandler, junior Jack Lano, freshman Max Hopkins, sophomore Ryan Wall, sophomore Michael Skowrwon, and junior Ryan Gardner combined for seven earned runs, 11 hits, three walks, and six strikeouts over nine innings of work.
The Eagles will look to bounce back on the road against Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday at 1 p.m, the first of two doubleheaders that weekend.
