Lang no-hits UNE, sets single-season saves record in No. 21 softball’s doubleheader sweep

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The No. 21 Husson University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon at Nor'easter Diamond, earning a 9-0 run-rule victory in game one before completing the sweep with an 8-4 win in game two.

Game 1: No. 21 Husson 9, UNE 0 (5 Innings)
In the opener, Husson's (20-3) offense wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for four runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Camryn King led off with a double and later scored, while freshman Sophia Lynch reached on a bunt single and came around to score following a throwing error. Senior Morgan Tainter delivered an RBI single in the frame, and sophomore Allie Casavant capped the inning with a two-run single to give the Eagles an early 4-0 lead.

The Eagles broke the game open in the third inning, plating five runs on five hits. Senior Morgan Curtis highlighted the inning with a two-run single, while Lynch added an RBI single and Tainter delivered a two-run triple to push the advantage to 9-0.

That was more than enough support for junior Ana Lang, who was dominant in the circle. Lang tossed a five-inning no-hitter, the first of her career, striking out 13 and allowing just two baserunners via walks, in addition to one hit batter to improve to 11-2 on the season. The no-hitter by Lang is the 21st in the history of the Husson softball program and the first since Danielle Masterson in 2024.

At the plate, King led the way with three hits and two runs scored, while Tainter drove in three runs. Curtis added two hits and two RBIs, and Lynch chipped in two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI as Husson finished with 13 hits in the win.

Game 2: No. 21 Husson 8, UNE 4
In game two, Husson (21-3) again struck early, scoring twice in the first inning. King singled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Lynch, before senior Lydia Rice followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

After the hosts answered with a run in the second, Husson responded with a three-run third inning. Rice delivered an RBI triple, later scoring on a wild pitch, while Casavant added an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Eagles continued to add on in the fourth, as Rice came through again with an RBI single to make it 6-1. UNE (12-13) chipped away with single runs in the fifth and a two-run homer in the sixth to pull within 6-4, but Husson answered in the seventh to put the game away. With runners on second and third, freshman Jetta Shook delivered a clutch two-run double to restore a four-run cushion at 8-4.

Junior Sierra Yates earned the win in game two, going five innings and allowing four runs on four hits while striking out three. Lang returned in relief to secure the save, tossing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts. With the save for Lang, she earned her fourth of the season, which set a new single-season program record for the Eagles.

Offensively, Rice led Husson with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Shook drove in two runs. Lynch added two hits and an RBI, and senior Tayler Watterson scored twice as the Eagles totaled 10 hits in the nightcap.

Husson will have a quick turnaround, as it will take the short trip up I-95 tomorrow evening for a single-game at Division I foe, University of Maine, with first-pitch set for 6 p.m.
