BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's lacrosse team used a dominant first three quarters to secure a 14-8 North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers on Saturday afternoon at John P. Boucher Field on senior day.
Husson (7-3, 2-1 NAC) came out firing in the opening quarter, scoring four of the first five goals to take early control. Senior Averi Baker opened the scoring off an assist from sophomore Reese Sullivan, followed by back-to-back tallies from sophomore Kate Boehmcke and Sullivan. Senior Laela Martinez added an unassisted goal to make it 4-0 before Maine-Farmington (3-8, 1-2 NAC) responded with three late goals to cut the deficit to 5-3 at the end of the first.
The Eagles quickly regained momentum in the second quarter. After the Beavers pulled within one early in the frame, Husson responded with a 5-0 run over the final 10 minutes. Baker and Martinez each scored during the stretch, while senior Madison Lower converted on a man-up opportunity and freshman Shannon McDonough added a goal in the closing seconds to give Husson a 10-4 halftime advantage.
Husson continued to build its lead in the third quarter, adding four more goals to effectively put the game out of reach. Boehmcke opened the scoring in the period before Martinez added another, and Baker capped the run with her third goal of the game. Senior Gracie Gardner added a late tally as the Eagles extended the lead to 14-4 heading into the final quarter.
Maine-Farmington made a late push in the fourth quarter with four goals, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as Husson closed out the 14-8 victory.
Martinez led the Eagles offensively with four goals, while Baker added three goals and two assists. Boehmcke finished with two goals and two assists, and Sullivan recorded two goals and one assist. Lower and McDonough each found the back of the net, and Gardner added a goal as well.
Martinez also added to her career day with six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw control wins, while Gardner tallied four ground balls and Boehmcke and Baker posted five and four draw control wins respectively.
Husson controlled possession throughout the game, holding advantages in ground balls (32-27) and draw controls (13-11). FreshmanSalin Bachor earned the win in goal with three saves.
Prior to the start of the game, the Eagles recognized their senior class of Averi Baker, Madison Lower, Laela Martinez and Gracie Gardner.
The Eagles are back on the field on Tuesday when they head to Gorham to take on the University of Southern Maine at 5 p.m.
