BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's lacrosse team erased a three-goal second-half deficit and used a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 12-9 North Atlantic Conference victory over the SUNY Delhi Broncos on Saturday afternoon at John P. Boucher Field.
SUNY Delhi (3-6, 0-2 NAC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the opening six minutes and eventually taking a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter. The Broncos struck first on a man-up opportunity before adding another goal at the 9:00 mark. Husson (8-3, 2-0) responded midway through the quarter when sophomore Dominic Hollenkamp got the Eagles on the board with an unassisted tally, and after SUNY Delhi extended its lead to 3-1, freshman Gabe Robinson closed the gap to one with a goal in the final 30 seconds of the period.
The second quarter saw SUNY Delhi maintain control, opening the frame with a goal to push the lead to 4-2. Hollenkamp answered again for Husson with 5:41 remaining, finishing off a feed from sophomore Cody Dingwell to bring the Eagles within one. However, the Broncos responded with back-to-back goals and carried a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Husson flipped the momentum in the third quarter with a relentless offensive surge. After SUNY Delhi scored early to make it 7-3, the Eagles rattled off four unanswered goals over a 4:36 span. Senior Kiernan Field sparked the run with an unassisted goal before adding another off an assist from junior Owen Giorgio. Giorgio followed with a goal of his own, and Hollenkamp capped the stretch with a finish off Giorgio's second assist to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles continued their momentum into the final period, taking their first lead of the game just over a minute in when Giorgio converted a man-up opportunity off a pass from Field. SUNY Delhi briefly tied the game at 8-8, but Husson quickly regained control as Field scored unassisted to put the Eagles back in front. Hollenkamp then delivered back-to-back goals, including one off a setup from Field and another from sophomore Taylor Schwalje, extending the lead to 11-8. Sophomore Drew Clinch added an insurance goal with under four minutes remaining, and despite a late man-up tally by SUNY Delhi, Husson closed out the 12-9 victory.
Hollenkamp led the Eagles offensively with five goals and one assist, while Field added three goals and two assists. Giorgio finished with two goals and two assists, controlling possession throughout the game with a game-high 11 ground balls. Clinch and Robinson each added a goal, and Dingwell and Schwalje each contributed an assist.
Defensively, Husson held advantages in ground balls (39-32) and faceoffs (16-7), helping fuel the comeback effort with sophomore Brian Peabody being the catalyst behind the strong faceoff performance from Husson, finishing 16-21 for the game. Senior Odin Burk earned the win in goal, making four saves on 13 shots on target.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they head to Thomas College for a 7 p.m. NAC contest.
