BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team used late-inning offense in both games to complete a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of Thomas College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Game 1: Husson 11, Thomas 9Â
Husson (8-11, 7-2 NAC) took the opener 11-9 in a back-and-forth contest that featured multiple momentum swings. The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from junior Matt Holmes, freshman Liam Kelley, and junior Henry Lausier.
Thomas (6-14, 4-5 NAC) responded with a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead, capitalizing on timely extra-base hits and run production with two outs. Husson chipped away in the fourth on an RBI triple from senior Cam Rendell and tied the game in the sixth when senior Hunter Curtis delivered an RBI single.Â
The Eagles seized control in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to take the lead for good. Sophomore Yates Emerson drove in a run with a single before a wild pitch and balk brought home two more runs to make it 9-6. Husson added two insurance runs in the eighth as Holmes launched a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to extend the lead to 11-6. The homer from Holmes moved him into solo possession of second-place on the all-time home run leaderboard for Husson baseball, trailing only Jackson Curtis.
Thomas made one final push in the ninth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to two, but senior Tanner Audyatis came on to record the final two outs and secure the save. Sophomore Noah Hurd earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.Â
Holmes led the offense in game one with two hits and three RBIs, including the key home run, while Kelley and Lausier each drove in a run as part of a 13-hit attack.
Game 2: Husson 5, Thomas 4
In game two, Husson rallied late once again to earn a 5-4 victory. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore Trevor Poisson, the Eagles fell behind 4-1 following a three-run sixth inning by Thomas.
Husson responded in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 4-3. Poisson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before freshman Preston Libby followed with an RBI single to bring the Eagles within one.
The Eagles completed the comeback in the seventh inning. After loading the bases, Kelley drew a walk to tie the game, and Lausier followed with an RBI single on the first pitch he saw to give Husson a 5-4 walk-off win.
Senior Allen Wheaton earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit over 1.2 scoreless innings, while junior Jacob Love kept Husson within striking distance with 5.1 innings on the mound.Â
Lausier led the offense in game two with two hits and the game-winning RBI, while Poisson and Libby each contributed an RBI.
