WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Husson University softball team continued its strong start to the season on Saturday, earning a pair of victories at The Spring Games with a 2-0 win over Kean University followed by an 11-0 run-rule victory over Gordon College.
Husson 2, Kean 0
Husson (3-0) opened the day with a tightly contested pitching duel before breaking through in the fourth inning to defeat Kean (0-4).
After three scoreless innings, the Eagles manufactured the game's only runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Camryn King reached base and later came around to score when senior Morgan Tainter delivered a single up the middle that plated King, who also advanced on a throwing error on the play to give Husson the lead. Later in the inning, the Eagles pushed across a second run to take a 2-0 advantage that would hold for the remainder of the contest.Â
Husson finished the game with five hits at the plate, while Kean managed just four.
The story of the opener, however, was the performance in the circle by junior Ana Lang. Lang tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits over seven innings while striking out 11 batters to keep the Kean offense off the scoreboard. She worked around several baserunners and consistently came up with key outs to preserve the victory.
Husson 11, Gordon 0 (5 innings)
The Eagles' (4-0)Â offense erupted in the second game of the day, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits to secure the run-rule win over Gordon (1-3).
After two scoreless innings, Husson broke the game open with a six-run third inning. King started the rally with a bunt single and later moved into scoring position before freshman Sophia Lynch followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Freshman Liv Noyes then brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly that also reached safely on an error, allowing King to score. The inning continued as the Eagles strung together additional hits and aggressive baserunning to build a 6-0 lead.Â
Husson added five more runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. An RBI double from Lynch highlighted the frame, while senior Emily Dunbar drove in two runs with a double of her own. Freshman Lilly Snow also contributed with a sacrifice fly that plated a pair of runs as the Eagles extended the lead to 11-0.
Several Eagles had strong performances at the plate. Lynch led the way with three hits, including two doubles and an RBI. Senior Tayler Watterson also collected three hits and scored twice, while King added two hits and two runs scored. Dunbar finished with a double and two RBIs, and sophomore Allie Casavant added an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, junior Jazmin Johnson delivered a dominant outing, throwing a five-inning shutout. Johnson allowed five hits and struck out three while not issuing a walk, keeping Gordon from mounting any scoring threat as Husson secured the run-rule victory.
The Eagles have matched their best start to a season since 2021, when they won their first seven games. Husson will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow when it takes on DeSales University and Wittenberg University, beginning at 9 a.m.
