BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's lacrosse rolled in North Atlantic Conference play on Monday afternoon, earning a 13-3 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on the road.
In the contest, senior Kiernan Field accumulated his 100th-career goal, which makes him the eighth player in program history to reach the milestone, in addition to becoming the fastest player to reach the plateau, doing so in just 25 career games.
Husson (7-2, 2-0 NAC) set the tone early and never looked back, scoring three goals in the opening five minutes of action to quickly seize control. After a pair of early saves from senior goalkeeper Odin Burk helped settle things defensively, the Eagles broke through at the 12:54 mark of the first quarter when sophomore Dominic Hollenkamp finished a feed from classmate Taylor Schwalje to open the scoring. Just over two minutes later, freshman Alek Duprey doubled the lead off an assist from sophomore Drew Clinch before junior Drew Held capped the early surge with a goal off a sophomore Brian Peabody setup to make it 3-0. SUNY Cobleskill (1-4, 0-1 NAC) found the back of the net in the closing seconds of the quarter, but Husson carried a 3-1 lead into the second.
The Eagles continued to build momentum in the second quarter, controlling possession and capitalizing on opportunities. Duprey struck twice in a span of just under two minutes, first off a Field assist and then on a feed from Peabody to extend the lead to 5-1. Husson added a man-up goal midway through the period as Field converted during an extra-man opportunity, pushing the advantage to 6-1 at halftime.
Husson remained in control coming out of the break, outshooting the hosts and maintaining strong defensive pressure. Schwalje opened the third-quarter scoring with a goal assisted by graduate student Jack Kaszubinski before Hollenkamp added his second of the game off a Field assist. In the final seconds of the quarter, Duprey completed his hat trick at the time with an unassisted tally to give the Eagles a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw Husson continue to pour it on offensively. Held added his second goal of the game early in the frame off a Duprey assist, and after SUNY Cobleskill briefly cut into the deficit with two quick goals, the Eagles responded emphatically. Clinch finished a feed from freshman Gabe Robinson, Field added another unassisted tally, and Duprey capped his standout performance with his fifth goal of the afternoon to close out the 13-3 victory.
Duprey led all scorers with five goals and one assist, while Field recorded a strong all-around performance with two goals and two assists. Hollenkamp added two goals, Held scored twice, and Clinch and Schwalje each contributed a goal and an assist. Peabody paced the team with two assists and added three caused turnovers, while the Eagles showcased a balanced offensive effort with nine different players recording at least one point.
Defensively, Husson was equally impressive, holding SUNY Cobleskill to just 10 shots on goal and forcing 21 turnovers. Burk earned the win in net with seven saves, while the Eagles controlled ground balls (25-11) and finished 22-of-24 on clear attempts.
Husson returns to action on the road on Wednesday when it heads to Salem State University for a 7 p.m. contest.
