BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team split a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with SUNY Cobleskill on Monday afternoon, bouncing back with a strong performance in the second game after dropping the opener to finish the season-series tied at two games all with the Fighting Tigers.
Game 3: Cobleskill 10, Husson 4
In game one, Husson (2-9, 1-2 NAC) fell behind early and could not recover in a 10-4 loss. SUNY Cobleskill struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more in the second to build a 6-1 advantage. The Eagles got on the board in the second inning when senior Hunter Curtis launched a solo home run, and they trimmed the deficit to 6-3 in the third. Curtis delivered an RBI single to score junior Henry Lausier before junior Matt Holmes followed with an RBI double to plate Curtis.Â
SUNY Cobleskill answered with a run in the third and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead. Husson's final run came in the sixth inning when Curtis reached on a hit-by-pitch, Holmes singled, and freshman Liam Kelley drove in a run with an RBI single to make it 8-4 at the time.
Curtis led the Eagles offensively in the opener, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and a home run, while Holmes added two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Kelley also drove in a run, and Husson received pitching appearances from sophomore Avery Lawrence, freshman Blake Littlefield, senior Ben Phillips and junior Jack Lano.Â
Game 4: Husson 7, Cobleskill 1
Husson (3-9, 2-2 NAC) responded in game two with a complete effort on both sides of the ball, earning a 7-1 victory to split the twin bill. After three scoreless innings, the Eagles broke through in the fourth when freshman Preston Libby reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single from freshman John Hanlon to give Husson a 1-0 lead.
SUNY Cobleskill briefly tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth, but Husson regained the lead in the sixth. Holmes singled and later scored on an RBI base hit from Libby to make it 2-1 heading into the final inning.Â
The Eagles put the game away in the seventh with a five-run outburst. Sophomore Yates Emerson reached on a walk before advancing into scoring position, and after an error put two runners on, Lausier delivered a two-run single to give Husson breathing room. Holmes followed with a sacrifice fly, and Kelley capped the rally with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-1.
Lausier finished with two hits and two RBIs, Kelley added a home run and two RBIs, and Libby and Hanlon each drove in a run. Senior Cam Rendell contributed a pair of hits, while Holmes added a hit and an RBI.
On the mound, freshman Jack Karlonas earned the first win of his career with five strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out four. Junior Ryan Garner closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief to secure the victory and his first career save.
The Eagles return home this weekend for their first action of the season at the John W. Winkin Sports Complex, as they will host Lesley University in a four-game NAC series, beginning on Friday with a doubleheader set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
