BOSTON, Mass. – The Husson University women's lacrosse team used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Suffolk University and secure a 9-7 road victory Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Sophomore Kate Boehmcke led the offensive attack with three goals and one assist, while senior Gracie Gardner added two goals and two assists. Freshman Amelia Saunders, senior Laela Martinez, freshman Grace Harrison and sophomore Reese Sullivan each found the back of the net once for Husson.
Suffolk (0-1) struck first on a man-up goal just under two minutes into the contest, but the Eagles (2-1) responded quickly. Boehmcke tied the game at 1-1 off a feed from Gardner at the 12:02 mark of the first quarter. Later in the period, Harrison finished a pass from senior Madison Lower to give Husson a 2-1 lead with 5:48 remaining. Suffolk answered with back-to-back goals, including one with one second left in the quarter, to take a 3-2 advantage after 15 minutes.
The Rams extended their lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter before Husson capitalized on special teams opportunities. Sullivan converted a man-up goal off a Lower assist with 6:58 remaining in the half, and Saunders followed less than four minutes later with another extra-player tally, set up by Boehmcke, to even the score at 4-4 heading into halftime.
Boehmcke opened the second half scoring with a free-position goal at 12:24 of the third quarter to give Husson its first lead since the opening frame. Suffolk responded twice in the period to tie the game at 6-6 entering the fourth.
The Eagles took control in the final quarter. Just 52 seconds in, Boehmcke connected again off a Gardner assist to make it 7-6. After Suffolk briefly tied the contest at 7-7 with 13:17 remaining, Husson answered with two decisive goals. Martinez converted a free-position, man-up opportunity at the 9:34 mark to give the Eagles the lead for good, and Gardner sealed the victory with a free-position goal with 1:45 remaining.
Defensively, Husson forced 32 Suffolk turnovers and caused 13 on the afternoon. Martinez led the way with four caused turnovers and three draw controls, while junior Jory Boyd collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Freshman Lauren Small scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers, and sophomore Finley Pomerleau made five saves in the complete-game effort in goal to earn the win in her first collegiate start.
As a team, Husson went 16-for-23 on clear attempts and converted three of nine free-position opportunities. The Eagles finished with 24 shots and 23 ground balls while holding Suffolk to 15 total shots.
Husson will look to pick up another road win on Tuesday when it heads to the University of Southern Maine for a 5 p.m. contest.
