BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team fought hard against the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Sunday afternoon, falling 78-74 in overtime to the Owls at Newman Gymnasium.
Husson (16-10) would find themselves down at the break, 28-25 against UMPI (15-12) after a back-and-forth first half of play, with both sides holding leads of no more than five points. Neither team would shoot the ball well in the first, with both sides hovering around 30% from the field. Senior Eric Ahlers would lead the Eagles in first-half points with seven.
The second half would continue this trend, with both teams taking turns with the lead. UMPI would start to pull away in the last minutes, holding a 64-58 lead with less than a minute to play. Sophomore Connor Heald would provide a huge spark at the 40-second mark, converting a four-point play, cutting the lead to two. Husson would get another defensive stop, with this time junior Andre McCauley scoring on a layup with nine seconds left. The Owls would have a chance to win it at the buzzer, but their shot fell short, extending the game to overtime.
When overtime came, UMPI took control early and never looked back, only missing one shot in the period. The Eagles just could not find the bottom of the net in overtime, shooting 3-10 in the period. Husson would close the deficit to just two, but the Owls knocked down their free throws to seal the game.
McCauley led the scoring for Husson with 25 points, and Ahlers added 14 of his own.
The Eagles would win the rebounding battle 47-36, and shot 43.5% from the field. But 19 turnovers and shooting 19% from three would be where Husson would fall short, as UMPI shot 39% from beyond the arc.
With this loss, the season has come to an end for the Husson University men's basketball team.
