BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University field hockey team opened conference play in dominant fashion on Saturday evening, shutting out the University of Maine at Farmington 3-0 at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Husson (3-6, 1-0) controlled the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Beavers (2-7, 0-2) 18-0 while holding an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Faith Tillotson led the Eagles' offensive effort with two goals and an assist, factoring into all three Husson goals.
The Eagles applied pressure early, earning a penalty corner just over four minutes into the contest before junior Mary Hamblin forced Maine-Farmington goalkeeper Hailey Johnson into a save.
Husson broke through at the 10:43 mark of the opening quarter. Following a penalty corner from junior Brianna Smith, Tillotson found the back of the cage to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles carried the one-goal lead through the second and third quarters. Husson continued to control possession and generate opportunities, including five penalty corners during the third period, but was unable to add to its advantage.
Husson's offense came alive again in the fourth quarter, when the Eagles recorded 10 of their 18 shots.
Tillotson doubled the lead at the 51-minute mark, scoring her second goal of the contest to make it 2-0. The Eagles continued to pressure the Beavers following the goal, forcing Johnson into several saves over the closing minutes.
Husson capped off the victory with just nine seconds remaining. Following a penalty corner by Smith, Tillotson set up sophomore Lauren Millett, who scored at 59:51 to account for the 3-0 final.
Tillotson finished with a game-high five points on two goals and an assist, while Millett added a goal and Smith recorded an assist. Hamblin led the Eagles with four shots, including two on goal, while Tillotson recorded three shots and Millett and sophomore Maddie Morin added two apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Duchette earned the shutout without having to make a save as Husson's defense held Maine-Farmington without a shot for the entire 60 minutes.
The Eagles finished with a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners, including five apiece in the third and fourth quarters, while eight of their 18 shots were on goal.
Husson returns to the road on Wednesday for a matchup against No. 15 Bowdoin College at 7 p.m.
