BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team got 21-point outings from senior Eric Ahlers and sophomore Connor Heald and rode a 52-point first half to a 101-83 victory over SUNY Delhi on Monday evening at Newman Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference play.
Husson (6-5, 5-1 NAC) was able to score at-will all game long, topping the 100-point mark for the second time this season, with the other coming in its season-opener against the University of Maine at Fort Kent where the Eagles posted 113 points.
The Eagles allowed Delhi (2-11, 1-5 NAC) to lead for just a brief three-minute stint near the start of the game before slowly taking control over the course of the first half.
After a three-pointer from the Broncos cut the Husson lead down to five with 8:17 left in the opening frame, the Eagles answered with a 19-5 run over the next five minutes to open up a 19-point lead, which would be its largest of the half.
Hot shooting from beyond the arc propelled the Eagles on their run, as they drilled five three-pointers during the stretch and shot 7-14 overall from three in the first half to take a 52-37 edge into the locker room.
The second half was more of the same for Husson, as its smallest lead in the final half was 13 points, leading to a key conference victory to get a busy January schedule started.
Ahlers and Heald led the way with 21 points apiece, while Ahlers scored 15 of his points in the opening half and recorded his third double-double of the season with a season-high tying 13 rebounds and four assists added to his stat line. Heald recorded an efficient shooting performance with an 8-13 clip, while also dishing out four dimes.
Junior Andre McCauley totaled 18 points on 6-10 shooting, in addition to grabbing a career-best eight rebounds, while senior Ty Henke got going from beyond the arc, recording 15 points on five three-pointers off the bench.
Senior Gil Matondo filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and three blocks, as the Eagles shot 52.3% from the floor for the game, including 44.4% from three-point range.
Husson outrebounded Delhi 44-28 and dished out 23 assists on 34 made field goals, while connecting on a season-high 21 free throw attempts.
The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going against SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
