PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team put together a dominant, wire-to-wire performance on Saturday afternoon, rolling past the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 78-34, in North Atlantic Conference action at Wieden Gymnasium.
Husson (13-7, 12-2 NAC) set the tone early, racing out to a 19-4 lead after the opening quarter behind strong defensive pressure and efficient scoring in the paint. The Eagles forced multiple early turnovers and limited the Owls (2-18, 1-13 NAC) to just two field goals in the first 10 minutes to build a commanding advantage.
The momentum continued in the second quarter as Husson stretched the lead to 41-15 by halftime. Sophomores Saige Evans and Lilly Roy led the charge offensively, combining for 17 points in the period as the Eagles shot 60% from the floor while holding UMPI scoreless from beyond the arc.
Husson maintained control coming out of the locker room, outscoring the hosts 16-9 in the third quarter to push the lead past 30 points. Freshman Sophia Carnes knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the frame, while the Eagles continued to dominate on the glass and convert second-chance opportunities.
The fourth quarter mirrored the rest of the afternoon, as Husson closed out the contest with a 21-8 advantage to secure the 44-point win.
Evans finished with a team-high 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds to complete her 10th-consecutive double-double, four steals, and two blocks, while Roy also scored 16 points and added two steals. Carnes chipped in 11 points and five assists, and sophomore Aubrey Kachnovich provided eight points off the bench.
Husson held a 47-31 rebounding advantage, forced 26 turnovers, and converted those into 30 points, while also limiting UMPI to just one three-pointer for the game.
The Eagles will head to New York next weekend for a two-game road trip, beginning on Friday with a matchup against SUNY Cobleskill at 7:30 p.m.
