BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team used a strong third quarter and a steady defensive effort to secure a 52-38 North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday night inside Newman Gymnasium to pull into a tie for second-place in the NAC standings.
Husson (11-7, 10-2 NAC) opened the game with energy on both ends, taking a 14-10 lead after the first quarter before extending its advantage to 29-20 at the half. The Eagles limited Farmington (12-5, 10-2 NAC) to just 20% shooting in the opening two periods while controlling the glass and pace of play.
The Eagles took full control out of the break, shooting over 63% in the third quarter and outscoring the Beavers 17-9. Husson pushed the lead to as many as 17 late in the frame, highlighted by timely baskets in transition and consistent finishes inside the paint, along with back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Sophia Carnes to end the quarter.
Farmington attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, but Husson's defense continued to force tough shots and limited second-chance opportunities. The Eagles maintained a double-digit cushion the rest of the way to close out the conference win.
Sophomore Saige Evans led Husson with 15 points and 11 rebounds, recording a double-double in her eighth-straight game to go along with a block. Senior Danielle Dow added 10 points, four assists and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Lilly Roy chipped in seven points and five assists. Carnes provided a spark off the bench with nine points, knocking down three three-pointers.
Husson shot 38.6% from the field and held Farmington to just 20% shooting for the game, including 3-of-29 from beyond the arc. The Eagles also won the rebounding battle 48-38 and finished with a 26-14 edge in points in the paint.
The Eagles will return to action as they continue conference play, looking to build on Friday's momentum with a battle against first-place Maine Maritime Academy at 5 p.m.
