Men’s soccer drops hard-fought matchup to Suffolk in home-opener

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team was in action on Boucher Field for the first time this season and battled Suffolk University, but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Rams on Saturday afternoon.

Suffolk (1-1-1) took advantage of a Husson (0-2-1) turnover just outside the 18-yard box just over three minutes in and displayed some skillful passing en route to a strike that found the bottom-right corner of the net at the 3:01 mark.

The Eagles found the equalizer about 15 minutes later, as a quick give-and-go on a corner kick from Husson allowed freshman Lucas Menchaca to play a cross to the feet of classmate Chadi Hamadi. Hamadi took one touch and lofted a shot on goal that looked to have been saved by the Suffolk keeper, but he lost his balance going backwards and fumbled the ball over the goal line to tie the game up at one.

Husson was able to survive having to sub out two of its centerbacks due to early yellow cards, as the match entered halftime tied at one.

The Rams held a 7-2 edge in shots in the first half, but placed just two of those on target. Husson held both a 3-0 edge in corner kicks and a 59-41 advantage in possession percentage.

Suffolk turned up the pressure and the physicality to begin the second half, but the Eagles were able to hold strong, as the game entered the 68th minute.

After the Rams were awarded a corner kick, a ball was played to the back post, where it was sent in front of the goal and deflected back to the near post and found the head of a streaking Suffolk player, who placed a shot through traffic and into the net to give the Rams the lead back.

The Eagles were unable to generate many quality chances in the final part of the second half, as their bid for their first win of the season came up short in a physical contest.

Suffolk bested Husson in shots (13-6) and shots on goal (4-2), while also generating eight corner kicks in the second 45 minutes and not allowing the Eagles any set pieces from the corner flag.

A total of 35 fouls were whistled in the contest and eight yellow cards were handed out in a hotly contested non-conference contest.

Junior Garret Jordan manned the net for the Eagles and made two saves in his 90 minutes of action.

Husson will hit the road for its next four contests, beginning with a trip to Bowdoin College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
