BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University football team nearly pulled off a comeback on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex, but a late WPI field goal proved decisive in a 15–13 setback.
The Engineers (1-2) jumped out to a 12–0 halftime lead, capitalizing on two first-half field goals and a 12-yard touchdown pass. After a scoreless opening half for the Eagles (1-2), senior quarterback Max Clark ignited the offense midway through the third quarter, capping an 80-yard drive with a 22-yard scoring strike to graduate student Cam Holmes.
Husson seized its first lead early in the fourth when Clark again connected with Holmes, this time from nine yards out, finishing a quick 71-yard march. Senior Garrett Martin's extra point made it 13–12 Eagles with 12:15 to play.
The defense kept Husson in front most of the quarter, highlighted by a relentless pass rush that produced three sacks and nine tackles for loss on the day. Sophomore JT Wright anchored the effort with a game-high 17 total tackles, while freshman Joseph Dube, graduate student James Boyd, and junior Drew Crouse each notched a sack.
However, WPI regained possession in the final minutes and converted a 35-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining to escape with the two-point win.
Clark finished 20-of-37 for 284 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball to several targets. Holmes led the receiving corps with six catches for 92 yards and both scores, while junior Jacob Lenz added five grabs for 96 yards, including a 52-yard reception.
Despite the loss, Husson's defense shined, holding WPI to just 33 rushing yards and forcing long third-down situations throughout the afternoon.
The Eagles open conference play next Saturday when they host Endicott College in a Conference of New England clash set for 1 p.m.
