BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's tennis team wrapped up a busy season-opening weekend on Sunday, as it fell to Simmons University 4-3 to open the day, before defeating the University of Southern Maine 5-2 to conclude action at the Bangor High School Tennis Courts.
Simmons 4, Husson 3
In its second North Atlantic Conference match in as many days, Husson (1-1, 1-1 NAC) fell just short of remaining unbeaten in NAC play, as it fell to Simmons (4-2, 2-0 NAC) by a score of 4-3.
After dropping the first two singles matches, junior Kayla Lockhart got the Eagles on the board with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory in the No. 3 singles match, while sophomore Mallory Beaulieu secured a 6-1, 6-2 win out of the No. 5 spot, in addition to freshman Katelyn Cotter captured a win via forfeit in the final singles match.
With the two teams in a 3-3 deadlock entering doubles action, Simmons was able to pick up victories in the first two doubles matches to secure the overall victory, despite losing the No. 3 doubles match to Beaulieu and junior Olivia Christensen via forfeit.
Husson 5, Southern Maine 2
The Eagles (2-1) were able to bounce back in the finale of their doubleheader, securing a 5-2 victory over Southern Maine (1-3).
Senior Julia Barber got things started for Husson with an 8-4 victory in the opening singles game, while Cotter followed her lead with an 8-1 win out of the No. 4 singles spot.
Two other Husson freshmen picked up wins in their collegiate debuts, as Sadie May and Elisabeth Kelly earned victories of 8-2 and 8-3 respectively.
Despite having already captured the overall win, Husson secured the point in the doubles matches with victories from Lockhart and sophomore Anah Albert out of the No. 2 spot (6-1) and Christensen and Beaulieu (6-4).
The Eagles return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Vermont State University Lyndon set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
