CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University men's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as it fell in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals to Maine Maritime Academy by a score of 28-12 at Ritchie Field.
Husson (8-8) managed to stop a quick start offensively for Maine Maritime (9-5) after it tallied two goals within the first 90 seconds of the contest, as junior Kiernan Field sliced the lead in half with a goal at the 11:21 mark of the first quarter.
The Mariners countered with the next five goals of the period before Field found his second goal of the contest.
Maine Maritime outscored the Eagles 3-2 in the final seven minutes of the period to take a 10-4 edge into the second period with freshman Taylor Schwalje and Field tallying the goals for the Eagles.
The Mariners shutout the Husson offense in the second period and tallied six goals of their own to possess a 16-4 edge at the halftime break.
Field and senior Nathan Vibber opened the second half with the first two goals, but the Maine Maritime offense posted the next eight goals to bring the score to 24-6 at the end of the third period.
The Eagles bested the Mariners 6-4 in the final period, but the damage from the previous three periods was more than enough to push Maine Maritime into the NAC title game.
Sophomore Drew Clinch and Schwalje tallied the first two goals of the period for Husson, while senior Sean Lyne tallied three and freshman Drew Held recorded the other goals for the Eagles.
Field and Lyne combined for seven of the 12 goals for the Eagles, while Field added three assists and Schwalje contributed two goals and three assists.
Husson was outshot 83-29 for the contest, including 59-20 in shots on goal, while the Mariners also secured more ground balls and faceoff wins.
Junior Odin Burk stood tall in net for the Eagles, as he set a new single-game record for the program with 31 saves, while he and the Husson defense converted on 22 of 27 clear attempts.
With the loss, the season has come to an end for Husson men's lacrosse.
