Women’s lacrosse falls to MMA in regular-season road finale

CASTINE, Maine — The Husson University women's lacrosse team dropped a 24-13 North Atlantic Conference-road decision to Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday Evening. 
 
Husson (6-7, 4-2 NAC) led 3-1 at the 8:10 mark in the first quarter, thanks to three-straight goals from senior Maddy Benoit, the first with an assist by senior Jordyn Lengle
 
MMA (11-1, 6-0 NAC) regained the lead with 2:43 remaining at 4-3, but junior Gracie Gardner tied the game 4-4 from freshman Kate Boehmcke, however, the Mariners rolled off two goals over the final :30 second to take a 6-4 advantage into the second quarter. 
 
The Eagles battled back in the second, cutting the Mariners lead to 7-6 with goals by Boehmcke from Gardner and Benoit assisted on a goal by junior Laela Martinez
 
Following Martinez's goal, MMA scored five unanswered goals to take a 12-6 advantage with 5:51 remaining in the first half. 
 
Senior Natalie Whitten ended the Mariners run with back-to-back goals, the first from freshman Reese Sullivan and the second from Martinez, but MMA closed out the half with two late goals for a 14-8 lead heading into the break. 
 
In the second half, MMA outscored the Eagles 10-5 to come away with the 24-13 conference win. 
 
Whitten added her third goal in the third quarter, while Benoit tallied her fourth goal on the night, followed by two goals by junior Averi Baker and the final score from Boehmcke. 
 
Baker finished with a team-high six draw controls, while Lengle added four and two caused turnovers. 
 
The Eagles will now turn their attention to the NAC championship with their opponent and time to be announced later this week.
