BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team moved its overall win-streak to seven games and remained unbeaten in North Atlantic Conference play following a doubleheader sweep of Vermont State University Lyndon on Monday afternoon at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex, taking game one 9-3, before finishing off the day with a commanding 13-0 win.
GAME ONE: Husson 9, VTSU Lyndon 3
Following a lead-off home run from Lyndon (6-18, 3-6 NAC), Husson (14-9, 7-0 NAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game.
The Eagles did all of their scoring with the bases loaded to plate three in the opening frame, as junior Hunter Curtis was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced, while an infield single from junior Cam Rendell and a sacrifice fly from senior Ryne Rametta allowed Husson to jump in front.
After the Hornets shaved a run off the deficit in the second, another sacrifice fly from the Eagles, this time from sophomore Matt Holmes, regained the two-run edge for Husson after two innings of play.
The Eagles added two more in the home-half of the fourth on an RBI-single from Holmes and an RBI-double from H. Curtis to extend its lead to 6-2.
A sacrifice fly from junior Colin Marshall in the fifth, another RBI-base hit from H. Curtis in the sixth and a sacrifice fly from senior Tanner Evans in the seventh allowed Husson to close out the game with a 9-3 victory.
Graduate student Jackson Curtis led Husson at the plate with three hits and three runs scored, while Holmes and H. Curtis each posted two hits and two and three RBIs respectively.
Senior Connor Abood earned his second win of the year on the mound after throwing 6.2 innings and striking out seven, while junior Allen Wheaton finished off the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, in addition to punching out three.
GAME TWO: Husson 13, VTSU Lyndon 0
After a scoreless first two innings of action, a two-run homer from Holmes gave Husson (15-9, 8-0 NAC) all it needed to secure the doubleheader sweep of Lyndon (6-19, 3-7 NAC).
Holmes crushed his eighth home run of the season over the right-center field fence to drive in graduate student Akira Warren to break the scoreless deadlock.
Warren got in on the two-RBI action in the home-half of the fourth with a single to center field to score two runners, before the Eagles broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
An RBI-double from Rendell, followed by another two-RBI single from Warren, an RBI-single from Evans and a two-RBI double from J. Curtis gave the Eagles a 10-0 lead after five complete innings.
With J. Curtis's two RBIs in the fifth inning, he became the Husson baseball all-time record holder for RBIs in a career with 161, besting the mark of Justin Spencer, in addition to moving into fifth-place on the all-time hits list.
The Eagles padded their lead even further in their final turn at the plate with three runs thanks to an RBI-single from junior Jack Cote, a run scored on a wild pitch and an RBI-single from senior Tyler Michaud to close the scoring.
Warren posted his third game of the season with three hits or more, in addition to tallying four RBIs and two runs scored.
Evans added a two-hit game, while J. Curtis and Holmes each drove in two runs and sophomore Henry Lausier drew two walks.
A trio of Husson pitchers combined to shutout the Hornet offense, as freshman Avery Lawrence hurled the opening three innings, allowing just two hits and two walks, while junior Ben Phillips got the win with two innings pitched, surrendering four hits and a walk and freshman Chris Lusignan gave up just one hit and two walks in the final two innings.
Husson is back in action tomorrow with another NAC doubleheader against SUNY Cobleskill beginning at 11 a.m.
