ATLANTA, Ga. – The Husson University baseball team couldn't overcome a four-run sixth inning from Oglethorpe University in Friday evening's season-opener, as it fell 6-5 to the Stormy Petrels in non-conference play.
After Husson (0-1) began the game by going six-up, six-down at the plate, senior Tyler Michaud led off the top of the third inning with a solo blast to left field on a two-strike count to put the Eagles up early.
Husson managed to put runners on second and third later on in the inning, but couldn't break the game open and carried a one-run edge into the home-half of the third.
Oglethorpe (8-4) answered the Eagles with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the third to knot the game back up, while junior Cam Rendell sent a two-run homer over the right field fence in the visitor-half of the fifth to bring home senior Ryne Rametta and give Husson a 3-1 edge.
The Stormy Petrels loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the fifth and managed to cut their deficit in half on a fielder's choice to second base, as the game went into the top of the sixth at 3-2 in favor of the Eagles.
After the top-half of the sixth went by without a blemish for Oglethorpe, the Stormy Petrels chased Husson's starter, senior Connor Abood after 5.1 innings and posted four runs in the inning to double up the Eagles 6-3.
Husson got some two-out traffic on the bases in the top of the seventh in the form of Rendell, who earned a walk to bring graduate student Jackson Curtis to the plate and Curtis took an 0-1 pitch to the opposite field for his first homer of the year to bring the Eagles back to within one.
Junior Tanner Audyatis got Husson through the seventh and eighth innings unscathed to give the Eagles a chance to tie the game in the ninth, but a weak ground ball to second base, followed by a strikeout looking and a line out to shortstop allowed the Stormy Petrels to pick up the win in the opener of the three-game series.
Curtis posted two of Husson's seven hits in the contest, while he and Rendell each drove in two runs and senior Tanner Evans drew two walks on opening day.
Abood took the loss on the mound, surrendering eight hits, three walks and four earned runs in his first start of the year, while Audyatis was impressive for Husson out of the bullpen, allowing no hits or walks and no runs in his 2.2 innings of work.
The Eagles will look to earn their first win of the year tomorrow when they battle Oglethorpe in an afternoon double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
