WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University baseball team dropped a road, non-conference matchup to the Colby College Mules on Wednesday evening, falling by a score of 5-2 at Coombs Field.
While it was Colby (8-1) who took the victory, Husson (4-5) found the first run of the contest in its first turn at the plate.
Following a single from graduate student Akira Warren and a double from classmate Jackson Curtis the Eagles had runners of second and third with just one out in the frame.
An RBI-single from sophomore Matt Holmes plated Warren, but Husson couldn't break through for any more runs despite loading the bases with only one out.
That missed opportunity and a lead-off error during Colby's first turn at the plate would lead to the Mules scoring four runs (one earned) in the opening inning to immediately take control of the game.
Two RBI-doubles in the frame led to the four runs for the Mules and instantly put Husson in a hole to recover from.
The Eagles settled in on the mound after allowing eight Colby batters to come to the plate in the opening, as the Mules placed just five runners on base for the remaining eight innings of play.
However, Husson wasn't able to gain any ground on Colby, as each team plated one run in the remainder of the contest with the Mules scoring on an RBI-groundout and the Eagles adding to their run total on an error from the Colby infield, as the game ended relatively quietly after a tumultuous start.
The Eagles received hits from six different players in the defeat, while junior Hunter Curtis and senior Tanner Evans each drew two walks.
Seven pitchers saw time on the mound for Husson, as junior Jack Cote, freshman Avery Lawrence, sophomore Jack Lano, juniors Ben Phillips and Allen Wheaton, sophomore Jacob Love and junior Tanner Audyatis combined for just one earned run, six hits, two walks and eight strikeouts in their eight total innings of work.
The Eagles will look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Newport, Rhode Island to battle No. 5 Salve Regina University in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
