BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team added a local basketball standout to the 2025 recruiting class, as after taking this past year off, Orono High School star Pierce Walston has committed to join the Eagles next season.
The decorated Orono standout played for head coach Ed Kohtala and led the Red Riots to back-to-back Class B State Championships. During his senior year, he averaged 17.8 points, 6.8 assists, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.4 steals, while leading Orono to a 15-3 record.
Walston collected numerous postseason awards, winning Maine Player of the Year from Gatorade and MaxPrep, in addition to Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald First Team All-State and Class B North Tournament MVP. Walston was also named first team all-conference 2023 and 2024 along with conference defensive player of the year in 2022 and 2023. For his career, Walston finished with 1,356 career points.
"Pierce had a very special high school career, leading his team to back to back state championships and filled his trophy case with postseason awards," head men's basketball coach Warren Caruso said. "Along with his athletic skills, Pierce is a great competitor and plays with a toughness which is infectious to his teammates".
The 6'0 guard's successes go beyond the hardwood. He was also a key member of back-to-back Class C State Football Championships and has spent this past year completing Basic Military Training graduation of Pavement and Equipment Technical School and is currently serving at the National Guard base in Bangor.
During his high school career, Walston served the Orono community in the Riot Buddies program, mentoring middle school students and he worked as a Special Olympics helper. Currently he is a basketball coach and trainer in the local Gymrats program.
Walston will study Business Administration - Small Business Entrepreneurship at Husson and he joins Chris Leone of Cypress Bay HS (Weston, FL) and Adam Chaffin of Trevor Browne HS (Phoenix, AZ) in Husson's 2025 recruiting class.
Walston will join a Husson team that is currently 15-7 and in first play in the North Atlantic Conference with a 9-1 record. Last season, the Eagles finished 23-6, winning the North Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles have won nine out of the last 14 NAC tournaments and three out of the last five.
