GORHAM, Maine - The Husson University men's lacrosse team secured its first victory of the season, 4-3, in overtime on the road versus the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday evening.
After two unanswered Huskies (1-1) goals in the opening quarter of action, the Eagles (1-1) defense stepped up in the second, allowing just six shots, and causing five turnovers. Husson closed out the half with a last minute power-play goal from senior attackman Sean Lyne, sending the Eagles to halftime with a one-goal deficit.
Husson continued to ride its momentum into the third quarter as freshman Dominic Hollenkamp found the back of the net just 50 seconds into the period, leveling the game at two a piece.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Huskies broke the deadlock, taking a 3-2 lead with nine minutes remaining in the game.
In the final minute of regulation down by one, a crucial Huskies turnover caused by sophomore defensemen Owen Giorgio and picked up by freshman Caleb Kirchner gave the Eagles one last opportunity to score the equalizer.
On the fastbreak, Kirchner delivered the ball on a rope to freshman Kiernan Field, who hammered it home past the Huskies' goaltender, forcing overtime in dramatic fashion.
Opening the sudden death period, Southern Maine secured the first possession, controlling the ball well in their offensive end until freshman Brian Peabody turned defense into attack with a critical takeaway.
A pinpoint lob from sophomore goalie AJ Torres to junior Aidan Byers led to yet another fastbreak opportunity for the Eagles, where a series of quick passes manipulated the Huskies defense, leaving freshman attackman Taylor Schwalje wide open in front of the net to deliver the dagger in overtime, completing the comeback.
Torres and junior Odin Burk stood tall in goal, totaling nine saves on 30 total shots faced, and converting on 22 of 33 clear attempts.
Sophomore Brad Stolt, Husson's faceoff specialist, also contributed to the teams comeback, winning 60% of the games faceoffs.
The Eagles next bout takes them to Pennsylvania, where they will face Rosemont College, their first of six games on their spring trip schedule.
