CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as it fell to Maine Maritime Academy on the road in the North Atlantic Conference East Division title game by a score of 88-59 at Smith Gymnasium in Castine.
Maine Maritime (23-4) made an instant statement in the opening quarter against Husson (15-12) by outscoring the Eagles 33-7 in the opening 10 minutes.
The Mariners scored the first six points of the contest on back-to-back three-pointers from Evelyn Dagan and opened the first seven minutes of the game on a 21-2 run.
Husson managed to hang with Maine Maritime in the second quarter, scoring the first four points of the second period, but the Mariners were able to best the Eagles 17-9 the rest of the second period to take a 50-20 edge into the locker room.
Freshman Saige Evans and graduate student Hannah Richards were the lone Husson players to record multiple buckets in the opening half, as they recorded five and four points respectively.
The Eagles found more of a groove offensively coming out of the halftime break, posting more points in the third period than in the first half entirely, but the Mariners were able to still hold a slim 24-22 scoring edge in the quarter.
Husson was able to win the fourth and final quarter 17-14, but the damage from Maine Maritime in the opening period was more than enough to send the Mariners to their third-consecutive NAC title game.
Richards and senior Jordyn Lengle were the lone Eagles to score in double-figures, as Richards posted 15 on 6-12 shooting, including 3-5 from beyond the arc, while Lengle added 10 points and two steals.
Husson shot just 28% from the floor as a team, including 22% from beyond the arc, but did manage to convert on 19-24 from the charity stripe in the contest.
With the loss, the season has come to an end for the Husson University women's basketball team.
