NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Husson University women's basketball team returned to the court on Tuesday for the first time in over two weeks and ran into a tough No. 3/4 Smith College team, falling 106-36 in the Smith Holiday Tournament at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Smith (8-0) was able to take control of Tuesday's contest from the get-go, as it built a 23-point lead after the opening quarter, while also outscoring the Eagles (4-4) 31-19 in the second period to take a 54-19 lead into the halftime break.
Husson showed some fight coming out of the locker room, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the third quarter, but the Bears were still able to stretch their lead out further by the end of the third stanza after holding a 26-12 scoring edge for the period.
Smith put the finishing touches on a dominant outing with a 26-5 fourth quarter to pick up its eighth win of the season and remain unbeaten.
Senior Laela Martinez led the Husson offense with 14 points, including three three-pointers, while sophomore Saige Evans also scored in double-figures with 11, also adding six rebounds.
The Eagles were held under 20% shooting by the stifling Smith defense, but managed to convert on 9-12 free throw attempts.
Husson will look to bounce back tomorrow when it wraps up 2025 and the Smith Holiday Tournament with a matchup against St. John Fisher University at 2 p.m. at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
