BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team picked up a sweep of its Vermont-based North Atlantic Conference opponents on Tuesday evening, as Husson defeated Vermont State University Johnson by a score of 91-80 at Newman Gymnasium.
Much like yesterday's contest, Husson (10-5, 5-0 NAC) was tested early on by its opponent, but Johnson (3-11, 0-3) was able to hang on and even possess a 32-25 lead on the Eagles following an opening 14-plus minutes that saw seven lead changes.
After a putback from Raymond Baka gave the Badgers their largest lead of the contest, Husson made the adjustment defensively of switching to a 2-3 zone to keep the quick and explosive guards of Johnson out of the paint and the move paid off.
The Eagles closed the opening half on a 17-3 run, which was highlighted by graduate student Jeremy Moronta, senior Riles Neff and junior Ty Henke, who accounted for all-but two of the points for Husson during the run, as the Eagles took a 42-35 lead into the break.
Neff put together a solid first half, tallying 17 points on 6-11 shooting, in addition to four assists and three steals to pace Husson.
The Eagles shot 41% from the floor and outscored Johnson in points on turnovers 12-2 in the opening 20 minutes.
Johnson didn't go away quietly to start the second half, outscoring Husson 17-8 in the first five minutes of the half and would take a 52-50 lead on a thunderous dunk from Baka.
The Eagles had an answer for the run by the Badgers, as they countered with a 16-2 outburst of their own to regain a 66-54 edge with 10:44 remaining.
Husson maintained a two possession lead or more for the remainder of the contest, as the Badgers were not able to get any closer than six points.
Neff finished with a season-high 30 to lead the Eagles offensively, in addition to six assists and five steals.
Freshman Connor Heald posted 14 second half points to finish with a career-high 19 for the game on 8-12 shooting.
Graduate student Scott Lewis put together a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double, while also adding five assists and four blocks, as he moved into second-place all-time in program history in career blocked shots.
As a team, Husson shot 45.8% from the floor and held a 22-12 advantage in fast break points over Johnson.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they head to Lesley University for a 3 p.m. NAC contest.
