BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team regained possession of first-place in the North Atlantic Conference East Division on Saturday afternoon, as it earned a dominating 85-60 win over the University of Maine at Farmington at Newman Gymnasium on senior day.
Husson (13-7, 8-1 NAC) fed off the energy of a packed Newman Gymnasium early on, as it scored the first eight points of the contest and opened the game on a 16-3 run all-together, which was capped off with back-to-back threes from senior Hamza Abdulrahman and graduate student Jeremy Moronta.
Farmington (10-9, 7-2 NAC) settled in after the early onslaught from the Eagles, as it tallied the next seven points to get back within six. The Beavers would match that six-point deficit two more times in the half, but it would be as close as they would get, as it was all Husson.
On the final occasion that saw Farmington cut the Eagle lead to six, Husson answered with a 7-0 outburst to immediately get the lead back up to double-digits, which it maintained throughout the remainder of the opening half.
Sophomore Tope Alao and freshman Connor Heald paced the Eagles in the opening half, as they scored 26 of the Husson 43 points in the first frame, tallying 14 and 12 respectively.
Moronta contributed seven points of his own, while he and fellow graduate student Scott Lewis each grabbed seven rebounds.
As a team the Eagles shot 54.5% from the floor and connected on 5-12 from three-point range, while holding the Beavers to just 28.6% from the field in the opening half.
The second half was more of the same for Husson, as it kept its lead at double-digits for the entirety of the frame, never letting Farmington get anything going on the offensive end of the floor, as the Eagles held the Beavers 20 points below their season-average and to their worst shooting percentage from the floor this season.
Alao finished a career-day on the offensive end of the floor with a 21-point outing, which is his new high in the green and gold, while also grabbing five rebounds and recording two steals.
Heald and senior Riles Neff each finished with 17 points on the afternoon, as Heald shot 7-10 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range, while Neff finished 5-10 from the field and 3-5 from deep.
Moronta posted another double-double with a 12-point, 11-rebound performance, while Lewis also hauled down double-figure rebounds with 11, in addition to his eight points.
The Eagles finished at 48.4% from the floor on the day, while finishing just shy of their season-best marks for three-pointers made and three-point percentage, in addition to winning the rebounding battle 40-33 in their wire-to-wire victory.
Next up for Husson is a two-game road trip in Aroostook County which begins on Friday with a non-conference battle against the University of Maine at Fort Kent at 7:30 p.m.
