PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Husson University baseball team slugged its way to two road victories over the University of Maine – Presque Isle by finals of 12-2 and 12-1 on Friday in North Atlantic Conference action.
In the opening game of Friday's conference doubleheader, senior
Jackson Curtis connected on a homerun to center field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Husson (18-10, 14-2 NAC) scored two more runs in the second inning to extend its advantage to 3-0, scoring the first run on a sacrifice flyout from junior
Tanner Evans and the third on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore
Hunter Curtis.
UMPI (3-23, 2-14 NAC) would allow seven runs to the Eagles in the fourth as
Jackson Curtis drove in his second run of the game, while freshman
Kevin Connolly plated two on a single and junior
Tyler Michaud connected on a two-RBI double to run the deficit to 10-0.
The Owls got on the board with one run in the fifth inning, but freshman
Henry Lausier blasted his first-career homerun in the seventh to push the deficit back to 11-1. Husson added another run in the seventh on an UMPI miscue to open up a 12-1 edge.
Presque Isle managed to plate a run in the bottom half of the seventh, but Husson came away with the 12-2 win.
Jackson Curtis finished 3-4 at the dish for the Eagles, while Connolly also recorded three hits and Michaud drove in a game-high three runs.
Junior
Connor Abood picked up the win for the Eagles, throwing four scoreless, two-hit innings and striking out three batters.
Freshman
Ryan Garner, sophomore
Ray Niski and senior
Ben Taneman combined for the final three innings, while Niski tossing a scoreless sixth innng.
As it did in Friday's opener, Husson wasted no time getting on the board with a run in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead.
Junior
Ryne Rametta pushed the Eagles led to 2-0 with an RBI single in the fourth, before
Jackson Curtis crushed his second homerun of the day in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead. Jackson's game-two blast tied Justin Spencer — who set the initial mark back in 2006 —for the most home run in program history.
Evans plated his second run of the day to conclude the fifth inning and run Husson's lead to 4-0.
Jackson Curtis added to his stellar afternoon in the seventh, doubling down the left field line, scoring another run to pushing the deficit to 5-0. Freshman
Matt Holmes also doubled, scoring Curtis for a 6-0 advantage and Evans launched a two-run home run that scored Holmes to give the Eagles a commanding 8-0 lead.
UMPI got on the board with its lone run in the bottom half of the inning, following a solo home run, but Husson ended Friday's doubleheader with four runs in the final inning to come away with a 12-1, game-two win.
Junior
Matt Wallingford was lights out on the mound for the Eagles allowing just two base runners of five innings. Wallingford surrendered one hit and struck out nine to pick up the win.
Sophomore
Tanner Audyatis pitched a one-hit sixth inning, while senior
Ryan Robb allowed just one hit over two innings of work, striking out two.
Jackson Curtis finished 3-4 again in game two, while Holmes tallied a three-hit performance. Both Evans and Rametta added two hits each, with Evans recording a game-high three RBIs.
The Eagles travel back to Presque Isle on Sunday for another NAC doubleheader schedule for 1 and 3 p.m.
