COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Husson University baseball team advanced to its fourth-consecutive North Atlantic Conference championship series following a 20-run onslaught in its 20-2 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Friday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Field.
Two runs from Husson (22-10) in the opening inning of play gave it the immediate lead courtesy of an RBI-single from sophomore Hunter Curtis, which scored classmate Keegan Cyr, in addition to a run from senior Akira Warren on a wild pitch.
The Eagles plated five runs in the second inning on an RBI-single from Warren and a grand slam from senior Jackson Curtis, which brought the Husson advantage to 7-0.
Husson posted three runs each in the third and fourth innings to push the game further out of reach. A two-RBI single and a run from Warren in the third and a sacrifice fly from freshman Matt Holmes and another two-RBI single from Warren in the fourth pushed the lead to 13-0.
The Eagles capped-off their scoring outburst with one run in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth inning. Another sacrifice fly from Holmes in the fifth and RBIs from Warren, J. Curtis, sophomore Cam Rendell and junior Tanner Evans, in addition to a run on a wild pitch from Evans in the sixth concluded the Husson scoring effort.
Six Husson pitchers combined to shut down the Cobleskill (17-22) offense, limiting the Fighting Tigers to just two runs on six hits and one walk, while coming together for 12 strikeouts. Junior Connor Abood got the start on the hill and racked up his fifth win of the year, while seniors Ben Taneman, Zain Fitzsimmons and Chris Naylor, freshman Ryan Garner and sophomore Mason Cycenas-Heimer each saw time on the mound in the win.
Warren led the Eagles at the plate with his five hits, six RBIs and four runs scored, while H. Curtis posted four hits and three runs scored, Cyr posted four runs and J. Curtis drove in five runs.
Husson will play in the NAC championship series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. at Fighting Tiger Field against the winner of Eastern Nazarene College or Cobleskill.
