BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University baseball team split its North Atlantic Conference opening doubleheader against Lesley University on Sunday by scores of 2-0 and 12-6.
In the Sunday's opener, Husson (4-7, 1-1 NAC) junior
Matt Wallingford got the start on the mound, throwing 5.2 strong innings, striking out five and allowing just four hits.
Lesley (9-8, 1-1 NAC) managed to get an unearned run across in the fifth for a 1-0 advantage and benefited from a homerun in the sixth to extend its lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Tanner Audyatis entered following the Lynx homer, throwing the final 1.1 innings, allowing just two hits.
The Eagles finished Sunday's opener with three hits as senior
Jackson Curtis, sophomore
Cam Rendell and senior
Austin Snow each collected hits.
However, in game two, the Eagle bats came alive, scoring 12 runs on 12 hits to split the doubleheader.
After trailing 1-0 following a Lynx run in the first, Husson plated four runs in the bottom of the inning, Rendell doubled to left center with the bases load to score three before scoring on freshman
Henry Lausier's RBI single for a 4-1 edge.
Senior
Akira Warren double in the second to score sophomore
Keegan Cyr before coming around to score on a wild pitch to extend Husson's lead to 6-1.
Lesley chipped away at the Eagles advantage with a run in the fourth, fifth and two in the sixth to pull within 6-5. But Warren connected on another hit, singling to right center and driving in two runs.
Following Warren's single, Husson managed to put runners on first and second before Curtis crushed a three-run home run over the left centerfield fence to run the Eagles lead to 11-5.
Husson added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice flyout by Snow, but senior
Alex Smith who entered in the top of the sixth inning in relief of junior
Connor Abood who earned the win for the Eagles, picked up the save, throwing the final four innings, allowing six hits and striking out three.
Abood pitched the first five innings for the Eagles, allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven Lynx.
Cyr, Warren Curtis and Rendell earn finished with two hits apiece, while Warren, Curtis and Rendell all tallied three RBI's each.
Husson will close out its NAC opening series on Monday when it hosts Lesley with first pitch set for noon.
