BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team picked up its eighth-consecutive win and improved to 12-2 in the North Atlantic Conference following a doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington on senior day at the Winkin Complex on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 10-1, and winning the finale 5-0.
GAME 1:
Husson (16-9, 12-2 NAC) posted eight runs in the first two innings and limited Farmington (8-25, 4-10 NAC) to just one run on two hits to come away with a game one win.
The Beavers found the scoreboard first with their only run of the contest in the opening inning, but it was quickly countered by the Eagles, as they posted three runs of their own.
A single through the left side from senior Jackson Curtis scored his brother Hunter Curtis from third to even the score at one. Sophomore Keegan Cyr gave Husson the lead following his run on a wild pitch, while freshman Matt Holmes extended the lead, as he plated senior Akira Warren on a single up the middle to make it 3-1 Eagles after one inning.
Five additional runs came Husson's way in the home-half of the second, as a bases-loaded walk from Warren scored sophomore Colin Marshall to make the lead 4-0 for the Eagles. Another RBI-single from Holmes scored H. Curtis and the inning was capped off by junior Tanner Evans, who ripped a bases-clearing triple into right field to score Holmes, Warren and J. Curtis made it 8-0 Eagles after two innings.
Husson added one run in the fifth and sixth innings to conclude the scoring and bring the score to 10-1. An RBI-double from H. Curtis scored Marshall in the fifth, while an RBI-double from Holmes brought in J. Curtis.
Holmes led the Eagles in game one at the plate with three hits, while he and Evans each drove in three runs. H. Curtis reached base in all four plate appearances, in addition, J. Curtis posted a two-hit game.
Senior Alex Smith hurled six innings, while picking up his third win of the year, allowing just one run on two hits and one walk, striking out three. Senior Ben Taneman cleaned up the final inning, pitching a clean inning.
GAME 2:
Much like game one, Husson's pitching shut down the Farmington offense, as five shutout innings from senior Matt Wallingford and two combined perfect innings from classmates Zain Fitzsimmons, Ryan Penney and Ryan Robb allowed the Eagles to come away with a 5-0 win and complete the weekend-sweep.
A free pass with the bases loaded from sophomore Jack Cote gave Husson a first-inning run, as H. Curtis crossed home plate.
The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the second, as an RBI-single from H. Curtis scored junior Ryne Rametta, in addition to an RBI-single from Warren that scored H. Curtis.
Husson posted its final two runs of the contest in the home-half of the fourth, as H. Curtis tallied his third run scored of the game, scoring on a throwing error from the Farmington left fielder after advancing to third on a single from Cyr. Holmes brought Cyr in later in the inning after he found a gap in the infield to push a single through the right side.
H. Curtis, J. Curtis and Warren each posted two hits in the victory, with H. Curtis scoring three of the five Husson runs himself.
Wallingford allowed just one hit and two walks in his five shutout innings, en route to his third win of the year.
Prior to the start of the contest, Husson honored its senior class of Warren, Taneman, Austin Snow, Smith, Chris Naylor, Robb, Penney, Fitzsimmons and J. Curtis.
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Gorham to take on the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action with first-pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
