BRIGHTON, Mass. – Husson University women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 6-3 victory at Simmons University on Friday evening.
Simmons (5-10) jump on the board early with a quick, 8-2 win in first doubles over senior Molly Chicoine and sophomore Julia Barber. Husson (6-3) responded quickly as senior Emily Doten and sophomore Joey Lynn Ramsdell, and junior Olivia Chandler and freshman Kayla Lockhart picked up victories in second (8-4) and third (8-3) doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
The Sharks picked up a pair of wins in singles to tie the match at 3-3. Emilie Lapointe began the singles competitions with a win over Barber in first singles, 6-2, 6-0. Megan Baadsgaard earned a come-from-behind victory over Doten in second singles to tie the match up. Doten won the first set 6-4, Baadsgaard tied up the match with a 7-6 win in second singles before winning a tie-breaker, 10-7 in the third set.
In third singles, Chicoine defeated Emily Lopez, 6-2, 6-1 before Ramsdell earned her own come-from-behind victory in fourth singles. Ramsdell fell to Sara Fucillo 6-3 in the first set but edged her out 7-5 in the second set and then won 10-5 in the third. Lockhart won the fifth singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Emma Parsons before Chandler held off Ainsley Foster in sixth singles. Foster nearly earned the Sharks second came back victory after dropping the first set, 4-6, with a 6-2 win in the second set to force the third set against Chandler. But Chandler was able hold off Foster, edging her 10-4 in the tie-breaker.
The Eagles will wrap up their 2023-24 season on Sunday at Curry College. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
