WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup against Colby College on Wednesday evening at Coombs Field by a decision of 15-5.
Husson (8-8) got on the board in its first turn at-bat, as sophomore Keegan Cyr and senior Jackson Curtis were each hit by a pitch and placed two runners on base for the Eagles with just one out. Sophomore Cam Rendell continued his hot stretch at the plate the following at-bat, driving in Cyr on a single to left field for his sixth RBI in the past two days.
Colby countered Husson's early run with a big bottom-half of the first, as the Mules plated six runs in the inning off of three hits and two Eagle errors.
The Eagles attempted to chip away at the Colby lead in the top of the second after freshman Matt Holmes, sophomore Joe Hamelin and Cyr each drew a walk to load the bases with one out in the inning. Senior Akira Warren drove in the only run of the frame for Husson after he scored Holmes on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Mules blew the game open in their next two turns at-bat, posting three runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the bottom of the third to take a firm 13-2 lead after three innings of play.
Following an additional run from Colby in the fourth inning, the Eagles doubled their score in the visitor-half of the seventh inning with Warren earning a free pass and junior Justin Salvatore posting his first base-hit of the season to get the inning started. Rendell added another RBI to his tally the following at-bat, as he ripped a double to left field to score Warren and move Salvatore to third. Freshman Kevin Connolly brought in Salvatore on an RBI-groundout to shortstop to post the fourth run of the game for Husson.
The Mules tacked on another run in the home-half of the seventh, but it was Holmes who put the final run on the scoreboard, as he blasted his third home run in his last four games over the fence to bring the game to its final score of 15-5.
Following a rough first four innings for the Husson pitching staff, the quartet of freshman Wyatt Stevens, sophomore Ben Phillips, senior Ben Taneman and sophomore Mason Cycenas-Heimer tamed the Colby offense, allowing just two runs on four hits and four walks over the final 5.1 innings of the contest.
Rendell, Holmes and Salvatore each posted two-hit outings to lead the Eagle offense, while Rendell drove in two runs and Holmes scored two runs of his own. The Husson offense as a whole continued a patient approach at the plate, drawing seven walks as a team in the game.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, as they will begin a crucial North Atlantic Conference weekend series with Thomas College. The four-game series will begin with a doubleheader in Waterville with first-pitch of game one set for 12 p.m.
