GORHAM, Maine – The Husson University women's lacrosse team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 14-11, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Hannaford Field.
The Huskies held a 3-0 lead until the 12:46 mark of the second stanza when senior
Sophia Gomez and sophomore
Averi Baker scored back-to-back goals just one minute apart to cut the University of Southern Maine's (4-5) lead to one with 11:37 left in the first half. Rachel Shanks and Julia McKenna pushed the Huskies advantage back to three with goals at the 10:15 and 9:00 minute marks of the second quarter.
The tide turned in dramatic fashion as Husson (3-7) scored six unanswered goals to take an 8-5 lead with 13:50 left in the third period, including freshman
Riley Maynard's first career goal at the 13:50 mark of the third stanza. Southern Maine responded quickly with three straight consecutive strikes, tying the game at 8-8 with 5:59 remaining in the third period.

Azabell Assaf and Baker gave the Eagles an 11-8 lead heading into the final stanza. However, the Huskies scored six unanswered goals in the final frame to earn the 14-11 victory.
Husson held the lead in shots on goal (23-22) while Southern Maine took the advantage in shots (41-34), ground balls (25-18) and draw controls (17-12) on the afternoon.
Sophomore
Emma Begin made eight saves in the net for Eagles while Southern Maine netminders Cece Racine and Lydia Laslavic stop 12 shots in the victory. Begin finished the game with two ground balls.
Baker scored four goals on nine shots with an assists and a ground ball. Gomez added three goals. Junior
Natalie Whitten chipped in with a goal and two assists. Martinez contributed one goal and one assist with a game-high eight ground balls, a team-high seven draw controls and caused a career-high seven turnovers. Maynard and Assaf both finished the game with a goal.
Shanks led the Huskies with five goals and an assists with one ground ball and a caused turnover. McKenna scored four goals with three grounds, a caused turnover and a game-high nine draw controls. Anna Byers had two goals and an assist with a pair of ground balls, a caused turnover and three draw controls. Kiaya Gatchell added two goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Raegan Bechard recorded a goal and an assists, while Paige Rinaldi and Catriona Gould each were credited with an assist in the victory.
The wrap up their four game road trip when they travel to Lyndonville, Vermont to take on the Hornets of Vermont State University Lyndon in a North Atlantic Conference matchup at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
