WATERVILLE, Maine – Graduate student Scott Lewis reached the 1,000-point plateau and the Husson University men's basketball team never trailed, as the Eagles rolled to an 89-72 win over Thomas College on Saturday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference play.
Husson (4-5, 2-0 NAC) started off Saturday's game much like it did this past Wednesday during its win over Maine Maritime Academy with some hot shooting from beyond the arc.
Graduate student Jeremy Moronta and senior Riles Neff sandwiched two threes by sophomore Andre McCauley with long-range shots of their own to give the Eagles an early 12-2 lead.
After seeing its lead get slashed down to just seven at the 11:46-mark, Husson used a quick 8-0 over the course of just over one minute to regain a 15-point edge.
However, the Terriers (3-7, 0-2 NAC) countered the outburst from the Eagles with a 15-4 spurt of their own over a four-minute stretch to cut the deficit down to 27-23 with just over six minutes left in the half.
It was all Husson for the remainder of the half, as it outscored Thomas 17-4 up until the final minute of the half, before the Terriers scored the final four points of the opening 20 minutes to head into the locker room with the score at 44-31 in favor of the Eagles.
Husson had an answer for one last push by the Terriers midway through the second half, as after Thomas cut the lead down to 10 following an early push by the Eagles, Husson blew the game open with a 16-3 run, which started and ended with three-pointers from freshman Dylan Burpee to grow the lead to 73-50 with 7:34 remaining.
The Eagles would cruise for the remainder of the half, as they never led by less than 15 points for the remainder of the game, as Lewis would secure his 1,000-point at the 4:04 mark on a fast break dunk courtesy of a feed from Neff.
Neff led the way with an 18-point performance for the Eagles, as he shot 7-14 from the floor, including 3-5 from three-point range, while also adding nine rebounds and five assists to his statline.
Moronta and McCauley each added 13, as Moronta posted four steals, while McCauley recorded two steals and drilled three three-pointers.
Freshman Connor Heald scored in double-figures for a second time this week, as he contributed 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Husson shot nearly 48% from the floor as a team, including 41.4% from beyond the arc, while winning the rebounding battle 45-35.
The Eagles will look to continue their win-streak this coming Friday when they host the University of Maine-Presque Isle at 7:30 p.m.
