DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Husson University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime deficit on Sunday afternoon, as the Eagles fell to No. 6 Trinity College (Conn.) in the championship game of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament by a score of 77-62 at the Tripp Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Dartmouth.
Husson (1-2) and Trinity (2-0) battled toe-to-toe for the first eight-plus minutes of action, as the Eagles grabbed a 13-12 lead on a layup from junior Gil Matondo.
After Matondo's basket, the Bantams took over, going on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to gain a double-digit edge.
The Eagles did their best to hang with the nationally-ranked Bantams, but trailed by 17 going into the locker room.
After failing to cut into the Trinity lead for the beginning half of the final 20 minutes, Husson showed some life. Trailing by 22 with just under 12 minutes left, the Eagles went on a quick 9-0 scoring outburst to cut the lead down to 13 and put some game pressure on the Bantams.
Husson continued to battle, getting the lead down to as little as 10, but couldn't manage to get any closer, as Trinity came away with the victory.
Graduate student Scott Lewis led three double-digit scorers for Husson in the game, as he tallied 14 on 5-9 shooting, in addition to grabbing six rebounds.
Graduate student Jeremy Moronta and Matondo were the other Eagles to tally double-digits, as they both added 10 points.
As a team, Husson shot nearly 38% from the floor and just shy of 30% from beyond the arc, while losing the rebounding battle by a significant margin, 41-23.
The Eagles will look to rebound on Wednesday when they head to Lewiston to battle Bates College in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
