Women’s soccer drops first round NCAA tournament matchup to No. 18 NYU

NEWARK, N.J. – The Husson University women's soccer team saw its season end on Saturday afternoon at the hands of No. 18 New York University, as the Eagles fell 7-1 to the Violets in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer National Tournament at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium, the home of the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

NYU (11-2-6) proved why they are the 18th-ranked team in the nation, as the Violets scored twice in the span of less than a minute to open up a 2-0 lead just over 13 minutes into the contest. Rena Kalargiros put in her sixth goal of the season on a pass from Kelli Keady to open the scoring, before Keady found the scoring column herself on a feed from Jessica Tonthat.

Keady put in her second of the contest in the 22nd minute to make it 3-0 Violets, while Carmen Cicerini posted an unassisted tally in the 25th minute to put NYU up by four.

Husson (13-8-1) got on the board before the halftime break, as senior Kate Harriman put in her 23rd goal of the year in the 43rd minute off of a long free kick from junior Caley Nault to send the game into the halftime break at 4-1.

The Violets posted three additional goals in the second half of play to further their advantage, as Keady secured a hat trick on a feed from Rachel Kim, while Marlee Scanlon posted an unassisted tally in the 76th minute and Cicerini concluded the scoring in the 90th minute on a pass from Isa Badillo.

NYU held a 25-4 edge in shots for the game, including 14-2 in shots on goal, in addition to a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Hannah Kenney and junior Madison Weigler each played one half in net for Husson, as Kenney made two saves on six shots in the first half, while Weigler turned away five shots in the second half of play.
