BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University football team dropped its regular season finale to the University of New England by a score of 25-14 on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex on senior day in Conference of New England play.
Husson (6-4, 3-2 CNE) drew first blood in the fourth annual Lobster Trap game, as junior Max Clark connected with senior Dom Wilson in the back corner of the right side of the end zone from 15 yards out to give the Eagles an early 7-0 edge. The drive was highlighted by a personal foul on the Nor'Easters on third down which extended the drive for Husson, in addition to a 27-yard catch and run from senior Ja'Quan Myles to set the Eagles up with prime scoring position.
UNE (4-6, 2-3 CNE) immediately answered the call, as Jarrett Henault hit Jakob Rivers from 14 yards away to bring the game back to even.
The contest remained tied up going into the second quarter, but the Nor'Easters would take their first lead of the game when Jack Niland drilled a 31-yard field goal to make it 10-7 UNE.
Following a punt from Husson, the Nor'Easters would tack on another field goal, this time from 21 yards, to double their lead on a possession that ate up nearly eight and a half minutes of the second quarter.
The Eagles gave UNE one final chance in the first half after punting on their final drive of the second quarter, but the Husson defense forced an incompletion as time expired in the half to send the game into the break at 13-7 in favor of the Nor'Easters.
After back-to-back punts to begin the third quarter, freshman Brayden Trombly would continue his stellar play on the defensive side of the ball, as he intercepted a pass from Chris Lang inside Husson territory to pick up a crucial turnover for the Eagles.
Two more punts would follow the turnover from UNE, but Husson would end the trend on its final drive of the third quarter, as senior Lavar Hunter capped off a nine-play drive, which was sent into the red zone on a personal foul by the Nor'Easters. The Eagles had a touchdown pass nullified on fourth and goal after an illegal formation penalty, but a pass interference call on UNE gave Husson a new set of downs, which Hunter took advantage of with a two-yard touchdown run on first and goal to give the Eagles a 14-13 edge.
Much like they did on Husson's first touchdown drive, the Nor'Easters responded again, as Damien Jones set them up with great field position after a 45-yard kick return to get UNE in plus-territory.
A 21-yard rush from Lang to end the third quarter put the Nor'Easters at the Husson eight-yard line to begin the final period and Jones punched it in from one yard away to give UNE a 19-14 lead after a failed two-point conversion try.
Clark looked to put the Eagles back in front on their ensuing drive, but he was picked off in the end zone on fourth down, allowing UNE to get possession back and chew up some clock.
The Nor'Easters did that and then some, as they ran over seven minutes off the clock and extended their lead, as Lang just got across the goal line on a 14-yard rush to put UNE ahead 25-14.
UNE shut down the final scoring chance of the day for Husson, as Clark was picked off again on the first play of the final drive for the Eagles, allowing the Nor'Easters to run out the final two minutes and secure their first victory in the Lobster Trap game.
Clark was 16-29 on passing attempts on the day, totaling 125 yards and one touchdown, in addition to four rushing attempts for two yards.
The running back group of Hunter, junior Jed Lober and freshman Aiden Sergent combined for just 44 yards on 19 rushes, in addition to Hunter's touchdown run.
Myles and senior Nason Berthelette led the Husson receivers, as Myles tallied four catches for 48 yards, while Berthelette posted six catches for 41 yards.
Trombly and senior Ricky Hendrix led the Husson defense, as Trombly posted 12 total tackles, in addition to his interception, while Hendrix tallied 11 stops, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
The Eagles are back in action next weekend when they compete in the Fusion Bowl, with their game opponent, time and location to be announced early this week.
