Football caps off come-from-behind win over Curry following late touchdown, two-point conversion

MILTON, Mass. – The Husson University football team earned a thrilling 35-34 Conference of New England victory over Curry College on Saturday afternoon on the road, following a late touchdown run from senior Lavar Hunter and a two-point conversion reception from junior Caleb Solomon.

Curry (2-5, 0-2 CNE) jumped on Husson (5-2, 2-0 CNE) early on by racking up two-straight touchdown drives to open the game, in addition to forcing the Eagles into a fumble on their opening drive of the game.

Finn Sullivan got the Colonels on the board with a two-yard touchdown run, while Michael Moriarty hit Colin Ridley from 48-yards away to give Curry a 13-0 lead less than midway through the first quarter.

Sophomore Cameron Cornett got Husson some good starting field-position on its second drive of the game, as he took a kickoff return 29 yards to set up the Eagles at their own 44-yard line.

Husson used a 13-play drive to find the end zone for the first time, as it used a combination of the run and pass to get deep into Curry territory and Hunter capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Identical to its second touchdown drive, Curry got a 48-yard touchdown reception from Ridley to regain its two-score lead, as it led 20-6 less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Following a turnover on downs from the Eagles and a punt from the Colonels, Husson put together a long touchdown drive to close the opening half, as it marched 75 yards in 12 plays to close the Curry lead to 20-13.

The Eagles used intermediate yards to get near midfield and would gain 15 extra yards thanks to a roughing the passer penalty on the Colonels to set them up inside the Curry 35-yard line.

After junior Jed Lober converted on a fourth-and-one to keep the drive alive, junior Max Clark hit senior Nason Berthelette for an 18-yard passing touchdown with 12 seconds left to secure the second touchdown of the day for Husson.

The Eagles got the ball to start the second half and Lober immediately put them in plus-territory, as he ripped off a 48-yard rush, while Clark and Berthelette connected two plays later from 28 yards away for a touchdown, but Husson would have the extra-point attempt blocked and would still trail by one point.

The Colonels found pay dirt on their opening drive of the half, as they rode the hot hand of Montie Quinn, who entered the day as the top rusher in the CNE, and regained their eight-point lead when Quinn scampered in from 11 yards out.

Husson looked to be in trouble following a turnover on downs on its next drive, as Curry was set up with first and goal after a lengthy drive, but the Eagle defense stuffed the Colonel rushing attack three times from inside the four-yard line to force a turnover on downs and maintain their one-score deficit.

After getting out to its 24-yard line to start the drive, three big runs from Lober and freshman Aiden Sergent set the Eagles up at the Curry 31-yard line.

Facing a fourth down, Clark hit Berthelette on a crossing route over the middle and the senior took the ball inside the five-yard line and allowed Lober to rumble in for a four-yard touchdown run on the next play. Clark found senior Ja'Quan Myles in the right corner of the end zone to convert the two-point conversion and tie the game up at 27 with 6:13 left to play.

As it did for most of the day, Curry rode Quinn offensively to regain possession of the lead with 1:54 left, as Quinn touched the ball on nine of the 10 plays on Curry's final touchdown drive, including a 20-yard rushing touchdown.

Husson would be sent back five yards to start its final drive of the game after a delay of game, but Clark would instantly make up for it when he hit Berthelette again for another big passing play to get the Eagles up to their own 40-yard line.

After a seven-yard rush by Berthelette, Clark would hit Lober on a screen pass, which the running back took 26 yards to get Husson down to the Curry 27-yard line.

Clark hit senior Dom Wilson on two-straight plays to get the Eagles down to the five-yard line and Hunter ran in on the next play to get Husson within one point. Instead of kicking the extra-point, the Eagles elected to go for a two-point conversion and Clark would find Solomon in the back-left corner of the end zone to put Husson up 35-34 with 19 seconds left.

Freshman Kane Smith would seal the victory for the Eagles, as he intercepted Curry on the first play of its final drive to allow Husson to come away with the victory.

Clark finished 22-31 through the air for 250 yards and two touchdown passes on the day, in addition to posting a near 71% completion percentage.

Lober led the Husson backfield with 20 rushes for 148 yards and a touchdown, in addition to hauling in four passes for 40 yards, while Hunter tallied 12 rushes and 81 yards with two scores.

Berthelette posted a career-high in receiving yards and receptions with his seven catches for 101 yards, while Wilson caught four passes for 50 yards on the day.

A trio of Husson defenders posted double-figure tackles in the win, as senior Ricky Hendrix led the Eagles with 11 tackles, while freshman Brayden Trombly and senior CJ Nicely each posted 10 total stops.

Husson is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Western New England University at the Winkin Complex for a 12 p.m. CNE contest.
