FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Husson University football team concluded its non-conference schedule with a road victory over Dean College, 24-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Husson (3-2) wasted no time finding the end zone, as senior Nason Berthelette set the Eagles up with great field position after he took the opening kick-off to the Dean (0-5) 40-yard line.
The Eagles capitalized on the good field-position, as junior Max Clark connected with senior Cullen Casey for a six-yard gain, while junior Jed Lober got Husson down to the one-yard line after four-straight rushing attempts.
Senior Lavar Hunter finished the job, as he bullied his way into the end zone from a yard away to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
After forcing a punt from the Bulldogs on their opening drive, Husson found the end zone again on its second drive, as a combination of air and ground attack doubled the lead for the Eagles.
Following three rushes from Hunter, two rushes from Lober and two passing attempts by Clark, senior Dom Wilson tallied his first touchdown of the season, as he connected with Clark for a 17-yard score to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.
Neither team was able to find the scoreboard in the second quarter, as both defenses took control of the game and Husson took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
After the Eagles forced Dean into a punt to begin the third quarter, Husson went 87 yards in just nine plays to post its third touchdown-drive of the game, as Clark found Casey for a 43-yard touchdown strike to break the contest open for the Eagles.
Husson forced a turnover from the Bulldogs on their ensuing drive, as junior Ryan Banister forced a fumble, which was recovered by senior DJ Wilson at the 32-yard line of Dean to set up the Eagles with more great field position.
While Husson couldn't find the end zone for a fourth time on the day, senior Cason Markevich still rewarded the Eagles with points, as he connected on a 39-yard field goal attempt to give Husson a 24-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles continued their dominant display of defense in the final quarter to lock-up the shutout and come away with the 24-0 victory.
Clark concluded his day 12-21 through the air for 146 yards on two touchdowns for Husson.
Lober rushed the ball 19 times for 98 yards, while Hunter earned 10 rushing attempts for 46 yards and a score to lead the Eagles on the ground.
Casey led the Husson receivers with six catches for 88 yards and his long touchdown reception.
Senior CJ Nicely paced the defense for the Eagles with 10 total tackles, while Wilson and sophomore Jahmye Tyson each recorded a sack in the win.
As a team, Husson limited Dean to just 138 yards of total offense for the game, in addition to just nine first downs and a 3-12 rate on third down conversions.
Husson will begin Conference of New England play next week when it hosts Nichols College at 2:30 p.m. for homecoming.
