BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team returned to the win column on Friday night at Newman Gym after an 80-71 North Atlantic Conference victory over the Hornets of Northern Vermont-Lyndon.
The Eagles (11-12, 9-3 NAC) opened up the contest on a 8-2 run as junior Scott Lewis and senior Derek Collin each scored four before the Hornets (6-15, 3-7 NAC) would fight back and lead for the middle part of the half. With four minutes left in the first half, the Eagles would regain the lead with a 12-2 run as they took a 32-24 lead into the locker room.
Collin began the second half with a traditional three point play to give the Eagles their largest lead of the contest at 35-24. The Hornets would keep chipping away at the lead until eventually tying the game at 59 with six minutes left in the contest. The Eagles would take back the lead in a big way by scoring nine straight points in a two minute span as they would hit their free throws down the stretch for the victory.
Graduate student Justice Kendall scored a team-high 17 points as well as eight assists while Lewis added 16 points and eight rebounds. Junior Jeremy Moronta scored 15 points as he went 7-of-7 from the free throw line and earned the double-double with ten rebounds. Collin was the fifth double-figure scorer as he added 11 points.Â
Tomorrow, these two teams will rematch at Newman Gym with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. as the Eagles will be hosting western country night. The concession stand will be selling Husson's signature wings and party hats as well as bandanas will be available on a limited basis. Come dressed in jeans, flannels, and cowboy hats and get out of the cold while enjoying some Husson Eagles basketball.
