ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Husson University men's swimming & diving team's 200-yard freestyle relay finished 14th this evening at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Swimming & Diving Championship at the Lejeune Hall on the campus of host United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
This meet is arguably the most prestigious college swim meet in the northeast boasting tough qualifying standards for NCAA athletes in DI, DII, and DIII. This meet is mostly made up of NCAA DI athletes.
The Eagles stand in 17th place with six points and owns a two-point margin over Cabrini College, while United States Naval Academy leads the meet with 255 points followed by Princeton University (140) and Columbia University (127).
Husson was the third highest finishing school among Division III squads in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a new school record time of 1:27.65. Graduate student Steven Johnston opened the race for the Eagles with a 21.51, followed by freshman Ryan Emerson in 21.83, graduate student Joe Vail in 21.93 and freshman Alex Walsh on the anchor leg going 22.38.
In the time trial session, the Eagles swam the 400-yard medley relay, which was good enough to smash the previous school record time of 3:54.84 by 13 seconds. Walsh led off with backstroke leg with a 57.20, before Vail's 1:02.45 breaststroke clip and Johnston swimming the butterfly leg in 52.29. Emerson swam the final 100-yards in 49.16 on the freestyle anchor to complete a combined time of 3:41.10. Vail's 1:02.45 breaststroke leg was the fastest 100-yard breaststroke split in program history.
In the morning preliminaries, Johnston turned in a 29th-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.56.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the second day of the meet.
