BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Husson University football team outlast the University of New England on the road Saturday to come away with a 30-27 win and return the Lobster Trap Trophy to Bangor.
Husson (6-3, 2-2 CCC) weathered a late Nor'Easters' fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday as UNE (6-3, 2-2 CCC) scored 13 unanswered points over the final 8:45 to cut in to the Eagles three score lead.
The Eagles began the afternoon scoring with a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter when junior
Elijah Garnett ripped off a 53-yard touchdown run for the early 6-0 lead.
The Nor'Easters took the lead on their next possession going up on Husson 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior
Nic Visser connected with junior
Ja'Quan Myles at the beginning of the second quarter on a 26-yard passing touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. UNE managed to tie the game on the following possession at 14-14, but left 2:25 on the clock.
That was all the time the Eagles needed as Visser connected on his second passing touchdown, again to Myles this time for 35-yard out to take a 21-14 lead into the halftime break.
Husson added a 22-yard field goal in the opening third of the third quarter to extend its lead to 24-14 and Garnett crossed the goal line late in the third quarter for his second rushing quarter to open up a 30-14 Eagles advantage.
However, UNE connected on a passing touchdown with 8:45 remaining and another passing score with :44 seconds remaining to cut into the Eagles lead at 30-27, but Husson was able to recover the onside kick and take a knee to walk away with its third-straight Lobster Trap victory.
Garnett finished with a game-high 156 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while Visser finished 16-23 through the air with 217 yards and two touchdowns.
Myles finished with a game-high 98 yards receiving and two scores, while tying junior
Cullen Casey with a team-high five receptions.
Defensively, senior Alex Smith finished with a team-high seven tackles, tying junior
CJ Nicely who also finished with seven stops. Husson finished the game with four tackles for loss and three sacks, while senior
Tucker Buzzell picked off a pass.
The Eagles will battle Nichols College on the road Saturday at noon in the regular-season finale.
