Strong effort sends men's swimming & diving past Maine Maritime

BANGOR, Maine - It was a complete team effort for the Husson University men's swimming & diving team on Sunday afternoon inside Webber Pool, as the Eagles defeated the Mariners by a score of 155-122.

Husson collected wins in 11 of 16 total events on the afternoon, including four 1-2 finishes as the Eagles topped the Mariners for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

Sophomores Alex Walsh, Ryan EmersonBrayden Champlin and Brady Hand helped the Eagles set the tone for the day with a meet-opening victory in the 400-yard medley relay. The group finished in 3:50.47.

After two wins Saturday vs. Gordon, Walsh picked where he left off with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.54), beating out teammate junior Hunter Jackson (2:01.67).

Emerson took home first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.52.

Graduate student Spencer Bernat won the the five-dive one-meter optionals with a score of 147.95 and later earned a victory in the six-dive one-meter event with 227.80 points.

It was another 1-2 showing for the Eagles in the 100-yard freestyle as Hand (51.37) edged sophomore Sam Peiser (52.38) for the win.

Walsh swam a fast 56.60 to take first in the 100-yard backstroke.

Emerson took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.72.

Champlin and Peiser went 1-2 in the 50-yard butterfly with respective times of 25.79 and 25.85.

The Eagles' final 1-2 swim came in the 100-yard individual medley with a win for Hand (57.94), followed by junior Isaias Therio at 1:02.89.

Husson closed out the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, behind a time of 3:21.95 from Walsh, Champlin, Peiser and Emerson.

Up next, Husson will compete at the State of Maine Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championship, hosted by Colby College. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 1.
